It was a typically cold and shivering-damp overcast October 25th in the Nation’s Capital in the year 2006, yet that date would forever be marked in history. It was reserved for the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Beechwood National Memorial Centre; and as a world watched a national dream take root, the day was nothing short of glorious.
Dignitaries from the Nation’s Capital, Beechwood Cemetery and its Foundation Directors, partners, staff, friends and media gathered ‘round what was to lie at the heart of the Centre: a centuries-weathered and storied rock unearthed from Beechwood’s 160 acre property. To the Centre “the rock,” as it is known, has a special significance. For among the sentiments and speeches spoken on that memorable day were the poignant words of the former Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces, Padre Peddle:
“The rock will remind people that in the midst of transient life, there is a permanence in the grander order of things. This rock will be our silent witness of the entire passage of human life. It will remind us that in the midst of our mourning, there is another reality that is firm, steadfast, enduring, and will last forever.”
Marveled the World Over
Officially opened in April 7, 2008 by her Excellency, The Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, the Beechwood National Memorial Centre is considered to be unique in the world. It is truly a stunning achievement of national and international significance.
