| | | | Beechwood National Memorial Centre Grand Opening - News Release | | | The Governor General Opens the Beechwood National Memorial Centre: ‘A National Place of Tribute’ OTTAWA, April 7, 2008 – Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, opened the new Beechwood National Memorial Centre today. Assembled for the occasion at historic Beechwood Cemetery were national and local dignitaries; community and business leaders; military, RCMP and police officials; distinguished guests; families and friends.
The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation dream of fulfilling Canada’s longstanding need for a facility designed to serve the memorial needs of all Canadians was made a reality today. “Canada and Beechwood Cemetery have come of age, and the time is right to create a national place of memorialization for Canadian families of all faiths and backgrounds,” said Grete Hale, Chair of the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation.
The Beechwood National Memorial Centre, designed by Ottawa’s Robertson Martin Architects, was created to meet the requirements of large and small memorial services for the community, both local and national. The 14,000 square foot facility consists of a magnificent nine-sided Sacred Space, a Hall of Colours that features the laid-up colours of Canada’s army, air force and naval regiments, and a beautiful memorial window to honour Canada’s Military Chaplains as well as two large reception rooms.
“Today, with her Excellency in attendance, we are opening more than a facility, we are opening a hallowed place where all will feel welcomed as they deal with the grief over the loss of a loved family member; a place where the healing can begin,” said Padre Gerry Peddle, the former Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces and Vice-Chair of the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation. To ensure that Canadians of all faiths and backgrounds feel at home and welcome in the Centre, extensive consultations were held with major faith leaders. As a result, the Beechwood National Memorial Centre can accommodate different observances. The Sacred Space and reception rooms can be configured to suit the memorial needs of each individual family. This multi-faith facility is believed to be the first of its kind in the world and is already gathering national and international attention.
“The Beechwood National Memorial Centre is a unique, national place where we can honour our military men and women, our RCMP, our police, our veterans, our Canadian leaders as well as our everyday heroes. The facility, alongside Beechwood Cemetery, will serve the memorial needs of all Canadians, as well as serving as an educational tool where children, their families, the community and the country can learn our rich history, culture and common heritage. Here life, in all its diversity and splendour, will be celebrated,” said Sylvia Ceacero, the Executive Director of the Beechwood Cemetery and Foundation.
Beechwood Cemetery celebrates its 135th anniversary this year. Since its establishment in 1873, more than 75,000 Canadians from all of walks of life, including many prominent Canadians such as Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden, Senator Maurice Lamontagne, Tommy Douglas, Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn, General Andrew McNaughton, Sir Sanford Fleming and poet Archibald Lampman, have found their final resting place at Beechwood.
Beechwood Cemetery obtained designation as a National Historic Site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in 2001. In the same year it became the official National Military Cemetery of Canada and in 2004 it became an RCMP National Memorial Cemetery.
Today’s opening of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre is an additional milestone in the illustrious history of Beechwood. These dreams have been achieved thanks to the Foundation’s vision of a cemetery of national relevance and importance. The next milestone is to obtain designation as the National Cemetery of Canada.
“Establishing a national cemetery in Canada’s capital would serve as a symbol of Canadian unity and pride, and as a means of preserving and promoting Canada’s rich history and diversity,” said Sylvia Ceacero, Executive Director of Beechwood.Beechwood is owned and operated by The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation, a not-for-profit organization and registered Canadian charity.

| | | | Beechwood National Memorial Centre Blessings | | | NEWS RELEASE Blessings Bestowed on the Beechwood National Memorial Centre OTTAWA, November 28, 2007 − Canada’s multi-faith leaders gathered today to bless the newly-built Beechwood National Memorial Centre. The blessing ceremony is an important first spiritual step in the Beechwood Cemetery’s preparation for the official opening of the Memorial Centre in the spring of 2008. The Beechwood National Memorial Centre was designed after extensive consultations with major faith groups to serve the memorial and commemorative needs of Canada’s diverse faith communities. As a result, it is devoid of any religious symbols. The Memorial Centre is intended to serve as an inspirational setting for services, ceremonies and memorials, special events, concerts and other celebrations of life.
“This blessing ceremony reminds us of the spiritual purpose of this new multi-faith Memorial Centre,” said Mrs. Grete Hale, Chair of the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation. ”In the spirit of unity in diversity, we’ve created an inclusive sacred space where Canadians of all faiths can honour their loved ones.”
The 14,000 square foot, nine-sided facility was designed by Ottawa’s Robertson Martin Architects. The Sacred Space area features a soaring vaulted ceiling, a large sky lit dome and, in the centre, a large 14-tonne rock. The stately facility also includes a large reception room and a Hall of Colours for military ceremonies. The Memorial Centre is believed to be the first of its kind in the world.
“The rock at the heart of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre says it all,” said Padre Gerry Peddle, the former Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces and Vice-Chair of the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation. “It reminds us that, in the midst of our mourning, there is another reality that is eternal.”
On this historical day, spiritual leaders from 30 faith groups participated in the blessing ceremony and deposited their holy funeral rites in the Sacred Space as a symbol of support for the new facility. Playing a key role was Brigadier-General Stanley Johnstone, Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces, who blessed both the Hall of Colours and the beautiful memorial stained glass window donated by the Canadian Military Chaplains’ Association to pay tribute to military chaplains, past and present.
Also part of today’s ceremony was the “laying-up” of colours (regimental flags) in the Hall of Colours by two of the largest Canadian military regiments. The Royal Canadian Regiment, Canada's senior Regular Force Infantry Regiment, and The Royal 22nd Regiment, presented their sacred colours to BGen. Johnstone. As is the tradition, the colours will hang in the Hall of Colours, untouched, until they completely deteriorate.
In the years to come, it is expected that other regiments will also bring their colours to Beechwood.
Our new Beechwood National Memorial Centre reflects the powerful vision that is evolving at The Beechwood Cemetery,” said Sylvia Ceacero, Executive Director of the Beechwood Cemetery and Foundation. “We are charting new territory by acknowledging Canada’s cultural diversity through the design of relevant, welcoming facilities and services.” In keeping with the Beechwood Cemetery’s vision, the Memorial Centre creates a sacred space to pay tribute to all of Canada’s heroes − leaders of government and the military, along with our everyday heroes, she added. Ms. Ceacero noted that the Beechwood Cemetery will continue to develop sensitive bereavement programs that more effectively support families at the time of their loss, and afterward.
The Beechwood Cemetery is home to the National Military Cemetery and is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police National Memorial Cemetery. It is also the final resting place for many prominent Canadians who helped shape Ottawa and the country, including many former City of Ottawa mayors, politicians such as former Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden, Tommy Douglas, and former Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn. | | | | Beechwood National Memorial Centre | | | Beechwood Cemetery “breaks ground” for new Multi-faith National Memorial Centre OTTAWA, October 25, 2006 – Taking a bold step into its future, the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation unveiled plans today for a stunning Beechwood National Memorial Centre that befits its vision of becoming Canada’s National Cemetery and serving Canada’s diverse faith community. At an official ground-breaking ceremony today, The Beechwood Cemetery Foundation announced that within the year a 14,000 square-foot, nine-sided National Memorial Centre will be ready to accommodate some of Canada’s most prestigious commemorative ceremonies, along with the intimate memorial requirements of families and individuals from every faith. “Canada deserves a sacred space that welcomes all of Canada’s faith communities. This glorious, light-filled space will reflect Beechwood’s national stature and our growing role as a place to commemorate the lives and achievements of Canadians,” says Grete Hale, Foundation President. “Our vision for this Centre builds on our efforts to respond to the call for a versatile space for larger national ceremonies.” About 400 people will be accommodated under the glass dome of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre designed by local architect, Robert Martin of Robertson Martin Architects. The Centre will also provide an inspirational setting for special events, concerts and other celebrations of life. The Centre will also feature a large reception hall with a “Hall of Colours” to display the laid-up colours of Canada’s military regiments. Canada’s Military Chaplains are currently fundraising for a stained glass window to honour those military personnel who served their country. “The design and purpose of the Centre make it unique in the world,” says Padre Gerry Peddle, former Chaplain General of the Canadian Forces. The design of the facility was the result of extensive consultations with local leaders of the world’s faith groups and The Ontario Multi-Faith Council. Each faith group can feel at home in the facility and can bring thier own unique memorial traditions to the space. At the ground-turning event today, dignitaries unearthed a large rock selected from the Cemetery’s property that will be placed at the heart of the Centre. “This rock will remind people that in the midst of our transient life, there is permanence in the grander order of things, “said Padre Gerry Peddle, who officiated at the ceremony. “This rock will be a silent witness of the entire passage of human life. It will remind us that in the midst of our mourning, there is another reality that is firm, steadfast, enduring and will last forever.”Situated on more than 160 acres, Beechwood is Ottawa’s premier cemetery and a National Historic Site. The Cemetery’s national importance stems from its role as home to both The National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces and the National RCMP Memorial Cemetery. Beechwood is also the final resting place for many Canadians who helped shape Ottawa and the country, including 26 former city mayors, over 40 families who have been commemorated in Ottawa street names, politicians such as former Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden, Tommy Douglas, and former Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn.
